R. L. Crouse
PTC No. 6
3 Print Set
PTC No. 6 "Armored
Horse" is a
limited edition
print series of 200, signed and
numbered by R.L.
Crouse. Sale proceeds benefit the
Kit Carson County
Carousel Association.
PTC No. 6 was originally
manufactured by the
Philadelphia Toboggan
Company in 1905 for Elitch Gardens in Denver, CO.
The Carousel is
a 3-abreast, stationary menagerie machine with
46 hand-carved wooden
animals including a lion, tiger,
dog, donkeys, camels,
goats, deer, giraffes, a hippo campus
and, or course,
many horses.
The 45-foot diameter
platform includes four chariots enclosed by
45 oil paintings
depicting a variety of subjects that were
popular themes in
1905. Accompanying the carousel is a
1909 Model 155 Wurlitzer
Monster Military Band Organ.
The people of Kit
Carson County purchased PTC No. 6
from Elitch Gardens
for $1,250 in 1928. A sum
considered an extravagant
expenditure in hard times.
In 1931, the Great
Depression temporarily discontinued the
annual county fair
and lead to the neglect of the carousel.
The Carousel was
restored when county citizens formed
the Kit Carson County
Carousel Association in 1975.
This restoration
project was made possible
through grants,
donations and fund raisers.
The 1976 Heritage Cookbook was one of the
first fund raisers.
Kit Carson County families submitted their
favorite recipes.
Included are details on plum pudding to
corn cob syrup.
These cookbooks have been sold out for
years. If one comes
up at auction it can bring over $200.
Crouse designed the cookbook's cover and
divider pages.
In 1979 the "original
paint" carousel was designated a
National Historic
Site by the U.S. Dept. of Interior,
National Parks Service,
under sponsorship of the
State Historic Society.
